Bunker Hill Community College Basketball Season Opens in New Gym
Friday, November 12, 2010
At 6 p.m., Monday, November 15, 2010, the Bunker Hill Community College women’s basketball team, the Lady Bulldogs, will play the first game in the first gymnasium the College has had since opening in 1974. Alfreda Harris, a Basketball Hall of Fame member and a longtime Boston-area college basketball coach, will present the game ball at the start of the women’s game against Bristol Community College. Harris is a former basketball coach for Emerson College, Roxbury Community College and the Shelburne Community Center in Roxbury.
Dana Barros, a Boston Celtics legend, will present the game ball at 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 23, 2010, for the College’s men’s basketball opening game against Holyoke Community College. Barros played for the Celtics from 1995-2000 and again in the 2003-2004 season, when he was also an assistant coach.
“I chose these individuals because both have close ties to Boston and are respected in basketball circles,” said Athletic Director Christopher Z. Jones, a former basketball star at the College who also played professional basketball. “I thought the players could relate to them and vice versa.”
Jones also said that it is an “unbelievable feeling” to be planning the College’s first official game on campus, and that the new gym is a “great advantage” as it allows the players to practice during the day to improve their skill level.”
The gym is part of the College’s new 48,000-square-foot Health & Wellness Center, which was dedicated in March of this year and which also has state-of-the-art classrooms for the nursing and health professions.
