BHCC Dedicates 48,000-Square-Foot Health & Wellness Center

Bunker Hill Community College will dedicate a new Health & Wellness Center on Tuesday, March 23, at 11 a.m., BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. Representing the Commonwealth at the event will be Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, State Representative Eugene L. O’Flaherty, Division of Capital Asset Management Commissioner David B. Perini, and Secretary of Education Paul Reville. Chair of the BHCC Board of Trustees Jeanne-Marie Boylan will officiate.

Bunker Hill Community College Research Director Wins Presidential Scholarship

David J. Leavitt, Bunker Hill Community College Director of Institutional Research, has won a Presidential Scholarship for advanced study at the Association of Institutional Research (AIR) Data and Decisions Academy, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced this week. The scholarship recognizes BHCC leadership in applying state-of-the-art data tools to strategies to increase student success.

Statewide Conference at BHCC Focuses on: Sustainability, the Digital Campus, and Student Engagement.

More than 500 participants came to Bunker Hill Community College on April 9th for the 13th Annual Massachusetts Community College Conference on Teaching, Learning and Student Development. The Conference, whose theme was “Student Success,” offered participants sessions in three different areas: 1) Sustainability, 2) the Digital Campus, and 3) the Culture of Student Engagement.

Vilma M. Tafawa, Executive Director of the International Center at Bunker Hill Community College, has been appointed to the Global Council of the Center for Global Advancement of Community Colleges (CGACC), BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced this week. The Center’s mission is to help community colleges both attract students from around the world and increase global opportunities at community college campuses.

BHCC Nursing Professor Honored in Boston Globe's Salute to Nurses

Professor Howard Weiner, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., was nominated by one of his students for the Boston Globe’s 8th Annual Salute to Nurses, published on May 2, 2010. “Professor Weiner champions the needs of the psychologically infirm,” wrote BHCC nursing student Scott Schocker. “Professor Weiner has inspired me to seek whatever resources are available in order to treat our patients with professionalism, compassion, empathy and dignity.”

BHCC’s Midnight Courses Media Campaign Receives “Grand Gold” International Award

Bunker Hill Community College won the top award – Grand Gold – from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for its Midnight Courses media outreach campaign, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in London and Singapore, CASE is the major professional organization for education professionals in communications, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations.

BHCC to Continue College Course Offerings at Malden High School

Bunker Hill Community College and Malden High School will sign a memorandum of agreement at the College on June 15, 2010, to continue offering college courses at Malden High School. Under a pilot program last year, 532 students enrolled in BHCC credit courses during the evening at Malden High School. There were 68 Malden High School students who completed courses at the satellite and the Charlestown campus, earning both high school points for graduation and college credits.

Bunker Hill Community College Wins National Science Foundation Grant

Bunker Hill Community College has received National Science Foundation funding to provide international experience for computer information technology students. With the grant, up to eight BHCC students planning to continue their technology degrees at the University of Massachusetts Boston will study next summer at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. At the end of the summer, the students will return to attend UMass Boston as juniors in computer science or information technology.

15th Annual Canstruction Competition Opens October 18, 2010

During the past 14 years, Boston-area design and construction firms have donated nearly 524,000 pounds of food (the equivalent of 399,000 meals) to the Greater Boston Food Bank through their participation in CANSTRUCTION. Thirteen firms will be participating again this year, during the 15th annual event taking place at Bunker Hill Community College starting on Monday, October 18, 2010, and running through Friday, November 5, 2010.

Board Chair of Bunker Hill Community College Recognized at National Trustees' Conference

Jeanne-Marie Boylan, chair of the Bunker Hill Community College Board of Trustees, was presented with the 2010 Northeast Regional Trustee Leadership Award at the Annual Community College Leadership Congress of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), held in Toronto, October 20-23rd. The Leadership Award recognizes a trustee whose contributions have affected “the total college program in the community, state or nation.”

Bunker Hill Community College Basketball Season Opens in New Gym

At 6 p.m., Monday, November 15, 2010, the Bunker Hill Community College women’s basketball team, the Lady Bulldogs, will play the first game in the first gymnasium the College has had since opening in 1974. Alfreda Harris, a Basketball Hall of Fame member and a longtime Boston-area college basketball coach, will present the game ball at the start of the women’s game against Bristol Community College. Harris is a former basketball coach for Emerson College, Roxbury Community College and the Shelburne Community Center in Roxbury.

The partnership between Bunker Hill Community College and the Pathway Technology Campus (PTC) of Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA) offers a direct pathway into higher education and careers. The IBA was recently honored as a Finalist for the 2010 Massachusetts Non-Profit Network Excellence Awards in the collaboration category. The PTC is an educational and workforce development partnership with Bunker Hill Community College.

Bunker Hill Community College Among Fastest Growing in U.S.

Bunker Hill Community College is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation, according to a study released last week by Community College Week. In the category representing the largest community colleges in the country, Bunker Hill Community College ranks no. 27 in terms of enrollment growth– and is the only community college in Massachusetts to make the list. The survey period covers fall 2008 to fall 2009, when enrollment at the College increased by 16 percent.
