Scholarships

The 2017/2018 Scholarship applications will be available in the Spring semester. Please click on the links below to access applications. 
You can also pick up a hard copy at the following locations:

  • Financial Aid Office
  • Student Activities Office
  • Disability Support Services

The deadline for the majority of scholarships is Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
Please turn them in to the Financial Aid Office at the Charlestown Campus. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Students applying for scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year must be:

  • Matriculated and enrolled full time (12 credits or more) at BHCC at the time of application, unless otherwise noted in the scholarship eligibility criteria;
  • Attending BHCC during the Spring 2017 semester;
  • Have no In-Progress (IP) grades at the time of the scholarship application deadline; and,
  • Have earned the minimum number of credits and/or cumulative GPA as specified for each scholarship.

BHCC Scholarships and Awards

Maximum of five (5) awards for Spring 2017 and a maximum of five (5) awards for Fall 2017.

Conditions: When scholarship eligibility criteria require a minimum number of credits or grade point average earned, only college-level courses (numbered 100 and above) taken at Bunker Hill Community College and applicable toward a degree or certificate program will be considered unless otherwise noted in the scholarship eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to continuing BHCC students who have earned at least 15 credits at BHCC; applicant must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher and will be enrolled full-time (12 or more credits) for the semester for which the award is granted.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for one semester.

Eligibility Criteria: New Culinary Arts student who is enrolled in a minimum of two (2) courses for the Spring 2017 semester. Preference will be given to students who entered BHCC with a GED, or to non-traditional or adult learners.

Amount: $350 for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. Scholarship may be used to purchase the necessary books, supplies and/or uniforms required by a student in the program or for tuition and fees.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing BHCC second semester Criminal Justice student who has achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and intends to complete the A.S. degree in Criminal Justice.

Amount: $500 for the Fall 2017 semester.

Eligibility Criteria: One graduating senior from Somerville High School nominated by the high school principal/ headmaster (or designee) is eligible for this scholarship upon meeting the following criteria: 1) be accepted into a BHCC degree or certificate program; 2) agree to participate in the BHCC Mentor Program during the scholarship award period; 3) have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher at the close of the high school academic year; 4) be an active member of the high school and community; and 5) be a current or former tenant of the Somerville Housing Authority.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Application Deadline: A nomination form and letter will be sent to the principal during the first week of April. Nomination forms are due no later than May 2, 2017.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to two (2) continuing BHCC students with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher who exemplify the institutional values of the College, demonstrate dedication to their field of study, and intend to complete either an A.S. or A.A. degree at BHCC.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: New or continuing BHCC student who is a resident of the Boston Housing Authority in Charlestown, MA. Continuing students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Amount: $500 for tuition and fees for the Fall 2017 semester. Award is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: New or continuing BHCC student who is a resident of Charlestown, MA, who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Charlestown community and is an active member of the community. Continuing students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. 

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (6-12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester; renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Up to seven (7) new or continuing students who are participants in the Chelsea FUEL Program who meet the following criteria: 1) have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the close of the high school academic year; 2) agree to participate in the BHCC Mentor Program.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (6 or more credits) for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains a 2.5 average.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing BHCC student who is a resident of Chelsea, MA, who has completed at least 15 credits at BHCC, and has achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.

Amount: The scholarship is for in-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing Commonwealth Honors Program student enrolled in the Commonwealth Honors Program within the current year. Student must demonstrate academic excellence and evidence of completion of Honors Program Contracts. Applicants, in a 500-word essay, must address the following topic: Select one of the Honors Contracts you have completed and discuss briefly how you would extend or further investigate the topic. Applications will be reviewed by members of the BHCC Commonwealth Honors Program Committee, using the applicant’s contributions to the Honors Program as part of their selection criteria.

Amount: $500

Eligibility Criteria: Graduating Commonwealth Honors Program student who has completed the Commonwealth Honors Program and has been accepted by and plans to attend a four-year institution. Students must demonstrate academic excellence and evidence of completion of all Commonwealth Honors Program requirements (three Honors Contracts and the Honors Seminar). Applicants, in a 500-word essay, must address either of the following topics: 1) If you were to continue in an honors program in the next academic year at another institution, describe an honors exploration/project with which you would like to become involved; or 2) If you were to recruit a student for the Commonwealth Honors Program, explain how that student would benefit from the program and include how you have benefited from the Commonwealth Honors Program. Applications will be reviewed by members of the BHCC Commonwealth Honors Program Committee, using the applicant’s contributions to the Honors Program as a criterion for their selection.

Eligibility Criteria: The grant is Awarded to one (1) new or continuing BHCC student nominated by City Year. Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher (or equivalent) and be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at BHCC.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester; renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements; renewable for the following year if nominated again by City Year and other requirements met.

Eligibility Criteria: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester; renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements; renewable for the following year if nominated again by City Year and other requirements met.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 11 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester; renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: All applicants must be enrolled in six or more credits for the Spring 2017 semester; must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.30 or higher; current SGA members are not eligible to apply.

Amount: $500 scholarship will be awarded to two returning students for Fall 2017 and a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to one June 2017 graduating student, who will be transferring to a four-year institution in the Fall 2017.

Eligibility Criteria: AAwarded to one or more continuing BHCC English as a Second Language students who (1) are currently enrolled in ESL at BHCC; (2) have completed at least six (6) credits of ESL at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher; and (3) a demonstrated financial need.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 6 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester; The scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements

Eligibility Criteria: Matriculated third semester nursing major who has demonstrated outstanding clinical competence and academic achievement (minimum 2.70 GPA) in courses completed at BHCC. Students must be enrolled in NUR211 at the time of application and intend to complete the A.S. degree in nursing during the next semester.

Amount: $500

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a continuing BHCC student who meets the following criteria: 1) is the first person in his or her immediate family to attend college; 2) has completed at least 30 credits (including development credits) at BHCC; 3) has qualified for financial aid; 4) has a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher; 5) is enrolled for at least six credits for the Fall 2017 semester; and 6) intends to complete either an A.S. or A.A. degree at BHCC. 

Amount: $1,000 for tuition and fees for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: For a new student who meets the following criteria: 1) be accepted into a BHCC degree program; 2) registered as a full-time student (12 credits or more); 3) have a 2.5 G.P.A. or better at time of application deadline; 4) demonstrate involvement in both community and high school; 5) and agree to participate in the BHCC Mentor Program.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees up to 12 credits for Fall 2016. Renewable for Spring 2017 and possibly future semesters if eligibility criteria is maintained.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing BHCC student who has demonstrated outstanding academic excellence while attending Bunker Hill Community College. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at BHCC (includes all credits earned at BHCC and current spring 2016 credits) and have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher. Applicants, in an essay of no more than 300 words, must indicate how they have contributed to the institutional values of the BHCC community and must also outline their career goals. Applicants will need to submit three (3) letters of recommendation (two of which must be from BHCC faculty), which speak to the applicants’ commitment to their courses of study and give examples of that commitment.

Amount: The award is for in-state tuition and fees for up to 12 credits for the Fall 2017 semester and is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Snowden International High School, Tech Boston Academy, Urban Science Academy, Winthrop High School.

Eligibility Criteria: One graduating senior from each of the high schools listed above, nominated by the high school principal/headmaster (or designee) is eligible for this scholarship upon meeting the following criteria: 1) be accepted into a BHCC degree or certificate program; 2) agree to participate in the BHCC Mentor Program during the scholarship award period; 3) have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher at the close of the high school academic year; 4) be an active member of the high school and community. 

Amount: In-state tuition and fees (up to 12 credits) for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: December BHCC graduate or June graduating BHCC student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability and has completed at least 30 credits at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher as of (and including) the Fall 2017 semester.

Amount: $1,000.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a continuing BHCC student majoring in Criminal Justice who has completed at least 20 credits (including development credits) at BHCC, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and intends to complete the A.S. degree in Criminal Justice at BHCC. Preference will be given to veterans and current military service members though other qualified Criminal Justice students should apply as well.

Amount: $500 for tuition and fees for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains the eligibility requirements.

Awarded to two (2) continuing students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math who have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher who demonstrate dedication to their field of study and intend to complete an A.S. degree at BHCC.

Amount per Scholarship: $750 towards tuition and fees for the Fall 2017 semester.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing BHCC student in an associate degree program with a concentration in mathematics, engineering or physics who has satisfactorily completed at least 30 credits and is entering the second year at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Amount: $250 for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Conditions: When scholarship eligibility criteria require a minimum number of credits or grade point average earned, only college-level courses (numbered 100 and above) taken at Bunker Hill Community College and applicable toward a degree or certificate program will be considered unless otherwise noted in the scholarship eligibility requirements. 

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a woman graduate (December or May) who is a member of Alpha Kappa Mu and/or has a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and is planning to transfer to a four-year college upon graduation. A 500-word essay and two letters of recommendation are required, attesting to the candidate’s academic excellence and leadership abilities.

Amount: $500 payable to the transfer four-year institution.

Scholarships will be awarded to support participation in selected study abroad programs in countries such as Argentina, Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Peru, Spain, and Scotland.

Eligibility Criteria: Students enrolled in a degree or certificate program who have completed at least 12 credits at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. 

Amount: 80 percent of total program costs.

Conditions: When scholarship eligibility criteria require a minimum number of credits or grade point average earned, only college-level courses (numbered 100 and above) taken at Bunker Hill Community College and applicable toward a degree or certificate program will be considered unless otherwise noted in the scholarship eligibility requirements. 

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to one new or continuing full- or part-time student, who has documented a permanent disability with the BHCC Office for Students with Disabilities, and been accepted into a BHCC degree or certificate program. Student must have financial need, as demonstrated by FAFSA. Preference will be given to students with permanent physical disabilities but other students with permanent disabilities will also be considered.

Amount: In-state tuition and fees for up to 9 credits, including developmental credits, for the fall semester; renewable for subsequent semesters if eligibility requirements and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 are maintained. A onetime additional amount of up to $1,000 can be used for assistive technology, laptop or books.

Eligibility Criteria: Continuing BHCC student who has demonstrated academic achievement and outstanding community service while attending Bunker Hill Community College. Community service includes civic responsibility/civic engagement or volunteer service. Applicants must have completed at least 30 credits at BHCC (includes all credits earned at BHCC and current spring 2016 credits) and earned a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher. Applicants, in an essay of no more than 300 words, must indicate specifically how they have contributed to the institutional values of the BHCC community and/or communities in which they are involved. Each applicant must submit three (3) letters of recommendation (two of which must be from BHCC faculty) that address the applicant’s leadership qualities as they relate to community service.

Amount: The award is for in-state tuition and fees for up to 12 credits for the Fall 2017 semester and is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to two (2) continuing Business Administration students who have earned at least 30 credits at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.

Amount: $250 for the Fall 2017 semester. Scholarship is renewable for the Spring 2018 semester if the student maintains eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a continuing student who (1) is enrolled in a degree or certificate program; (2) has completed at least 9 credits in college-level courses at BHCC with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher; (3) has a high motivation to succeed; (4) has a financial need but is not eligible for federal financial aid. Preference will be given to students with an immigrant experience but other students who meet the eligibility requirements may apply. An essay is required.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a new or continuing BHCC student who is a graduate of and has an endorsement from the Year Up program in the Greater Boston area.

Amount: $500 for the Fall 2017 semester for in-state tuition and fees and or other academic-related expenses; renewable for the Spring 2018 semester provided recipient earns a cumulative 3.00 GPA and is endorsed by Year Up.

Application Available: This scholarship is awarded differently from others as the recipient is chosen by the Year Up program.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to two (2) students who have been convicted of a criminal offense and served a sentence in a correctional institution but have been out of prison for at least one year. Student must demonstrate financial need and the ability to earn at least a C+ grade in college-level courses. The scholarship is intended primarily for Hispanic/Latino or Black/African American men who have been formerly incarcerated, but other ex-offenders, including women, may also apply and will be considered. Convicted level 2 or 3 sex offenders will not be considered. An essay, three (3) letters of recommendation, and an interview are required.

Amount: $1,250 for the fall semester; renewable for the spring semester if eligibility requirements are met.

Conditions: When scholarship eligibility criteria require a minimum number of credits or grade point average earned, only college-level courses (numbered 100 and above) taken at Bunker Hill Community College and applicable toward a degree or certificate program will be considered unless otherwise noted in the scholarship eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a student who has completed at least 9 college-level credit hours at BHCC with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher and intends to complete an A.A. or A.S. degree at BHCC.  Student must have financial need as demonstrated by a recently completed FAFSA and be an active member of the BHCC community. 

Amount:  $1,000 scholarship. $500 will be disbursed for the fall semester; and will be renewable for the spring semester, provided student maintains eligibility criteria.

  • Financial need as demonstrated by FAFSA 
  • Plan to attend BHCC full-time (12 credits or more) for Fall 2016
  • Intend to complete an associate degree at BHCC by 2018 (preferably May, but August or December graduation dates are acceptable)

Participation requirements:

  • Commit to take at least 24-30 college-level credits during the 2016-17 academic year, which can include Summer Sessions
  • Be part of a Learning Community seminar in your first or second semester
  • Participate in three one-hour seminars regarding components of Life Map during the first or second semesters
  • Sign a FERPA Release Form in order to allow the College to report to the Foundation on your progress toward graduation
  • Agree to work no more than 12 hours per week during those semesters when you are taking 12 or more credits; if you would like a College Work Study job, we will try to arrange one for you.

The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters, provided the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in college-level courses, fulfills the participation requirements, and continues to demonstrate financial need as determined by a FAFSA.

Amount: $2,500 per semester for a maximum of $10,000 over 4 semesters. This scholarship can be combined with federal (Pell) or state grants.

  • Engage in active and consistent planning for transition out of BHCC, either to a job or a four-year college

Award: $2,500 per semester for a maximum of $7,500 for three semesters. This scholarship can be combined with federal (Pell) or state grants.

This is a newly established scholarship fund which will be available to one or more students in the fall of 2017.

• Have a financial need as demonstrated by a completed FAFSA form
• Matriculate in a degree program at BHCC
• Enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours, at least 9 of which must be college-level
• Maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA in college level courses.

Amount: One or more scholarships of up to $1,000 each.

Affiliated Scholarships and Awards Coordinated Through BHCC

Bunker Hill Community College works with various organizations in the community to provide additional scholarship opportunities for students. These scholarship applications often require the student to apply through the specific organization. Review individual scholarship eligibility and application guidelines and procedures for more information.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduated from a Boston public high school or a Boston charter high school, or received a GED after attending one of these schools; or graduated from the Metco program while residing in Boston
  • Applied to the scholarship within fifteen years of high school graduation or earning a GED
  • Enrolled and started a college, trade school, or vocational program after completing high school
  • Left your educational program (without completing) due to a range of family, personal or educational reasons
  • Used your time away from your educational program productively, such as being involved in a variety of community, school and work activities

Amount: up to $5000

Eligibility Criteria: Merit-based scholarship awarded to a Fall 2016 BHCC graduate or to a Spring 2017 BHCC graduating student with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Must be a resident of Massachusetts and be accepted for admission to UMass-Boston for the Fall 2017 semester.

Amount: Full waiver of tuition & fees for two (2) years

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Women currently enrolled, are matriculated in an academic program and have completed at least three courses in their major at a Massachusetts public college or university.
  • Must have a documented cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Essay should include future goals including educational goals and aspirations
  • Must submit two completed recommendation letters from a college faculty or staff member describing your background, barriers overcome, and achievements.
  • An unofficial transcript
  • Only completed applications will be considered

Eligibility Criteria: Current residents of Charlestown, MA or those enrolled at an institution of higher education located in Charlestown, MA who are enrolled in a program of study leading to a health career (excluding MD) at the associate degree level or higher. Must have completed at least two (2) semesters of study with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have demonstrated leadership qualities through community service.

Amount: $1,500

Eligibility Criteria: Students who have completed their associate degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher; are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens (as defined by the FAFSA), and have been accepted for admission at Salem State College and will be enrolled as a day student.

Amount: $2,000(full-time)$1,000 (part-time)

Amount: $2,500 per year for full-time students (pro-rated for part-time) until graduation requirements are met.
