Thursday, December 21, 2023

BHCC student Valentina Ramos is the recipient of the 2023-2024 Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship. When Valentina was awarded the Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship, it served as a turning point in her life. “Now that I have this big financial help, I can slow down in my job, take more classes, and focus more on my education,” said Valentina.

The Tom Brunnick Memorial Scholarship, established in 2022 by the Brunnick family in honor of their grandfather, Tom Brunnick, is making significant strides in supporting adult learners through First Literacy, a Boston-based nonprofit. Tom Brunnick's immigrant journey and resilience inspired the scholarship to foster a supportive community for recipients pursuing full-time education.

Originally from Colombia, Valentina came to the United States facing formidable challenges, including health issues and language barriers. Despite these obstacles, the scholarship provided a turning point in Valentina's life, enabling her to reduce work hours, focus on education, and address health concerns. Currently studying at Bunker Hill Community College, Valentina aspires to complete her bachelor's degree in psychology by 2024 and pursue a master's in behavior analysis, aiming to work with children with special needs.

Valentina’s dedication and hard work have caught the attention of others. She was recently invited to join the Commonwealth Honors Program at BHCC and was recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society. She is also actively participating in a leadership program, The National Society of Leadership and Success.

First Literacy is the only organization in Massachusetts that awards scholarships to adult students based on nominations from community-based Adult Basic Education programs.
