Sociologist Matthew Desmond is the author of New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. In 2015, Desmond was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant for “revealing the impact of eviction on the lives of the urban poor and its role in perpetuating racial and economic inequality.” His landmark work Evicted tells the stories of eight families living on the edge and the landlords who control their fate. Desmond will transform our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation (unfair or inadequate pay for work) while providing fresh ideas for solving one of the most urgent issues facing America today - housing insecurity.

BHCC's Spring 2018 Jazz Celebration presents acclaimed vibraphonist and composer Cecilia Smith with the Ron Savage Trio on Thursday, April 12, 2018, 1-2:15 p.m. in the A300 auditorium. The program will include a special tribute to the legendary composer and pianist Mary Lou Williams. The BHCC student Jazz Ensemble and BHCC Choir will also participate in the program. The event is free and open to the public. Cecilia Smith is a performer, composer, educator and multimedia artist who is based in New York City. She has been a key contributor to the Mary Lou Williams Resurgence Project and has conducted extensive research in the Mary Lou Williams archives housed at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Ms. Smith has arranged, performed and conducted works by Mary Lou Williams across the country, often involving large choir and instrumental ensembles. As a Berklee College of Music graduate, Ms. Smith has deep connections to Boston. She will be accompanied by the Ron Savage Trio. Mr. Savage, former head of the percussion department and now dean at Berklee College of Music, is a longtime collaborator. Ms. Smith last performed at BHCC twenty years ago.
