“What is Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM)?” Each year we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 till October 15. Our Heritage, in this context, highlights the lives, experiences, attributes, challenges, and accomplishments of a Heterogeneous People of Latin American Origin. However, the question has always lingered in many of our minds. What is HHM? In this discussion we will address the following: What do we mean by Heritage? What do we mean when we say “Hispanic?” What do we mean when we say Latino/a/@/x? How is it that some Identify with one concept, others with the other concepts, and yet some use both concepts interchangeably. Please engage with us in a discussion on the origins of the term “Hispanic” and “Latino/a/@/x.” What do we prefer? Why do we have that preference? Do we need to rethink the “term” we should use to better capture the celebration of “our” Heritage? Through dialogue, questions, small and whole group discussions, we hope to broaden and expand our perspective and understanding of what our Heritage truly means.
