A Conversation with Guest Artist Woomin Kim Every work of art has its own unique, distinctive and intrinsic qualities that allow us to perceive and understand it in both individual and collective ways. "Looking" at art, with our eyes, hands or other senses, deepens our understanding of the object. But what do we really see? To "see" a work simply in terms of the artist's biography, or by an assumption of what the artist intends the viewer to see, is not the only way of looking at art. Perhaps our "seeing" art in new and exciting ways reveals another story . . . other hidden stories. Join BHCC guest artist Woomin Kim as she discusses her Minerals in Use series, now part of Boston Children's Museum latest exhibition Looking and Seeing, opening May 1, 2021 and running through July 29. https://bostonchildrensmuseum.org/future-gallery-shows Featuring remarks by Melissa Higgins, Senior Director, STEAM and Faith Johnson, Art Educator and Program Manager, Boston Children's Museum. Go behind the scenes to learn about how women artists have navigated the pandemic and built cross-disciplinary community during a time of separation and loss. Hear new works and participate in a collective conversation about music, choirs, history and the resiliancy of art created during the time of COVID-19. BHCC Chamber Choir will debut it's vocal ensemble and arts collaboration In the B Flat Minor--an exciting choral collaboration with composer and lyricist Rie Daisies, featuring BHCC Chamber Choir, special guest vocalists from across the US, international dancer and performance artist Laura Pietiläinen [Finland], and documentary filmmaker Luz Valdez [Peru]. Also, be inspired by an encore broadcast of A String Only She Could Play--a collaboration between professional musician and Professor Felice Pomeranz (The Gilded Harps of Boston and Berklee College of Music/Boston Conservatory at Berklee) and BHCC Professors Riikka Pietiläinen-Caffrey, Performing Arts and Proshot Kalami, English and Performing Arts Departments. Experience how the musical instrument of the harp, poetry and singing tell the hidden stories and little-known histories of women in music. Displaced; An Immigrant and a Veteran (Episode 1)

Event
Art Gallery%2C Veterans%2C Performing Arts
A radio drama based on the extraordinary experience of surviving war and finding a place called "home." Original Play by Proshot Kalami, Professor in English and Performing Arts, featuring Andrew Prescott and Proshot Kalami with Original Music by Salar Ayoubi, and Sound Engineering by Cam Perridge Remarks by Misael J. Carrasquillo, Special Programs Coordinator, BHCC Veterans Center Sponsored by the Mary L. Fifield Art Gallery About the Play: Displaced; An Immigrant and A Veteran is a two actor play based on personal narratives collected through extensive interviews with refugees, immigrants and US military veterans who survived the conflict of war in the Middle East. The latter individuals lived under extraordinary circumstances, and often faced prejudice upon their return from combat. Refugees, immigrants and veterans alike search for a place to call "home," positioned on confronting sides of a spectrum defined by displacement--an experience that needs much addressing in our society today. In this original play, the audience is asked to engage with and ponder stories of displaced persons. We are asked to question what it is that we call "home" and what it means to belong. We are also forced to confront deeply held bias, unconscious hatred and outright prejudice against immigrants. The work aims to create a culture of resistance and resilience against forces that divide us. It gives voice to real life experience and complex human emotions. As such, it also moves toward a process of reconciliation and healing--a transformation through the medium of performance. In conjunction with the 2021 Spring Arts Festival Poetry moves us, shakes us, sometimes even awakens us! Be inspired by College faculty and staff, who are also published poets, as they enter into the shared, creative, perhaps even sacred space of the Poetry Circle—where everyone is free to share their story, explore their authentic voice, and connect in true community. Featuring Jean-Dany Joachim, Lloyd Sheldon Johnson, Vanesa Pacheco, D. Eric Parkison, Deborah Schwartz, George Walters-Sleyon, and others Remarks by Dr. Lloyd Sheldon Johnson, Professor, Behavioral Science Department Sponsored by the Mary L.
