Series 1 of 3
Do you wonder why there is still a strong push to be productive despite the pandemic? What has the pandemic revealed about your relationship to rest? Are you exhausted and overwhelmed?
Join facilitator, author and creative, Julia Mallory, as she examines what prevents our ability to rest and not just fall from the sky. She will explore the myth of super or (sub)humans; racial and gender caricatures, including the StrongBlackWoman and SuperWoman, and the culture of hyper-productivity. This month, CIP looks to the historical archives, lived experience, and current events for revelation related to the Black American experience.
At the center of its examination is the evolution from forced free labor to under/uncompensated labor and how these realities produce inequalities ranging from the sleep gap to the wage gap.
Remarks by Denise Turner, Office of College Events and Cultural Planning
Sponsored by the Division of Health Sciences

On February 7, 1926, Carter G. Woodson, initiated the first celebration of Negro History Week which led to Black History Month, a month dedicated to deepening the study and scholarship of African American contributions in the United States. But every February which inventors, innovators and activators generally receive the most attention? Usually it's Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, etc. This discussion will go beyond those standard bearers of Black History Month, not to lessen their contributions, but as a testament to a few of the thousands of individuals who have helped build our nation.

This session addresses social situations students may encounter and offers safe methods of intervention that promote pro-social behavior. Bystander Training is a community-based approach that teaches safe methods for bystanders to prevent and respond to situations without jeopardizing their safety. Many behaviors that become sexual harassment, sexual assault, hazing and bullying often begin as low-level remarks or scenarios which, if we had the skills, we could manage differently and hopefully avoid future problems. The more you know, the better prepared you will be to respond in a safe and responsible manner. This session is open to everyone and lasts approximately 90 minutes. All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. Sessions are scheduled for: Thursday, February 25 at 1 pm or Wednesday, March 3 at 12:30 pm. To sign up and receive the links to participate, please email: studentactivities@bhcc.edu AND specify which day you you like to attend.

At the forefront of Dr. King's mission and legacy is considering how best to serve one's community. His wife, Coretta Scott King, continued his legacy of conceiving an achievable society that would carry out the mission that we are all called to be of service to our community, both local and global. Please join us for an evening of reflection and conversation that brings together diverse interpretations that were submitted from BHCC Engaged Campus during Black History Month and put together into a collage that resonates with our “Beloved Community”.
