Remarks by Misael J. Carrasquillo, Special Programs Coordinator, BHCC Veterans Center

About the Play: Displaced; An Immigrant and A Veteran is a two actor play based on personal narratives collected through extensive interviews with refugees, immigrants and US military veterans who survived the conflict of war in the Middle East. The latter individuals lived under extraordinary circumstances, and often faced prejudice upon their return from combat. Refugees, immigrants and veterans alike search for a place to call "home," positioned on confronting sides of a spectrum defined by displacement--an experience that needs much addressing in our society today. In this original play, the audience is asked to engage with and ponder stories of displaced persons. We are asked to question what it is that we call "home" and what it means to belong. We are also forced to confront deeply held bias, unconscious hatred and outright prejudice against immigrants. The work aims to create a culture of resistance and resilience against forces that divide us. It gives voice to real life experience and complex human emotions. As such, it also moves toward a process of reconciliation and healing--a transformation through the medium of performance.
