Bunker Hill Community College Wins Million-Dollar Grant for Nurse Scholarships

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) a four-year, $1,050,000 grant to support the education of nursing students.
The funds will provide scholarships for at least 210 students in the College’s Nurse Education Program. Priority will be given to students for whom the cost of participating in the program constitutes a severe financial hardship.
The HRSA grant amount represents a significant increase from last year’s total of $117,000. For 2013 the College will receive $225,000, a sum that will increase to $300,000 by the fourth year. Under new federal guidelines, BHCC competed for HRSA funds against university-level nursing and medical schools and was awarded its request in full. The grants will be used for scholarships that cover tuition, books and living expenses related to nursing education.
“We are extremely pleased that HRSA recognized the efforts of BHCC’s Nurse Education Program to increase the number of underrepresented and disadvantaged individuals, to serve nontraditional students and to help students graduate and obtain employment in medically underserved communities,” said Dr. Patti-Ann Collins, Interim Dean of Nurse Education, Medical Imaging & Respiratory Therapy.
