BHCC’s Common Interest Communities bring together students with common interests, academic goals, or career aspirations for structured activities outside of the classroom. Common Interest Communities are free of charge and open to all BHCC students. The following Common Interest Communities are available in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009:

Bringing Literacy Into Children’s Lives Bringing Literacy Into Children’s Lives
Are you a parent or primary caregiver of a child? Share ideas and explore methods of bringing reading, writing, and oral language into children’s lives. Make connections and friendships with other students and staff who are caring for children. Meetings are held weekly on Mondays from 1-2:15 p.m. in room E-236. Refreshments will be served. Students and staff are welcome. Attendees will be able to choose an age-appropriate book for their children.

Connect U Mentors Connect U Mentors
When you were in high school, did you ever think you would be going to college? Did you have a friend or family member who encouraged you? Are you interested in helping someone like yourself get acquainted with college? Apply to be a Connect U Mentor and offer a local high school student advice on how to get a good start in college and life. Stop by the Engaged Campus Office, room C-316A, for an application to serve as a Connect U Mentor in Spring 2009.

Are you volunteering or involved in an internship in your community? Come together with other students who share your commitment and interests to explore topics such as making connections between career and civic responsibility, employer expectations, teambuilding for the workplace, and student development and leadership. Students will have the opportunity to receive educational scholarships for completing service hours in the community. Meetings are held Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in room B-211A.

STEM Learning Community STEM Learning Community
Are you majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math? Make friends with fellow STEM students, connect with faculty and staff, and participate in collaborative learning experiences that will help you meet the challenges of being a STEM major. Activities will include peer mentoring, research workshops, major advising, guest speakers on STEM related careers, job shadowing, field trips, and participation in other BHCC grant funded STEM opportunities. Join us for meetings on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month, 1:00 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. in room D-301.

Succeeding in International Business Succeeding in International Business
Are you interested in an international business career? Learn about other countries’ business cultures, enhance your qualifications as a world citizen, and make friends with other students who share your career interest. Activities will include group discussions, guest speakers, and a how-to portfolio for taking an international business trip. This Learning Community will start in Spring 2009.

Are you enrolled in RDG-090, ENG-090, and MAT-091? Make friends, discover your strengths, and learn the skills, strategies and supports you need to succeed in college. Stop by the College Connection, room D-206, for a schedule of weekly meetings. Topics explored will include career planning; learning styles; balancing work, family and school; and goal setting. Join us for meetings on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, 1:00 -2:00 p.m., room D-206.
