What is the Language Lab staff schedule?

The Language Lab schedule is posted on our website as well as on the doors of the Language Lab. If you would like to work with a particular Lab staff member, be sure to check his/her schedule; it is posted on the door.

Can I get help in the Language Lab if I don’t have an appointment?

Yes, you can drop in and use the computers and get help if staff members are available. If you would like help at a specific time, or with a specific staff member, we recommend that you make an appointment. The appointment board is located at the front of the lab.

What kinds of things can I get help with in the Language Lab?

You can get answers to any questions you may have about reading, writing and speaking in English. We can help you with your essays (see below), as well as in preparing for your ESL and English exit exams.  We also provide tutoring to students taking French, Spanish and Italian classes and help with TOEFL preparation.

Do you teach classes in the Language Lab?

We offer many different one-hour workshops to help you improve you writing, grammar and, computer skills. We also offer individual and classroom orientations to all the programs and other resources available to students in the lab.

I got an IP in my ESL/English class, what do I need to do to complete it?

The professor who gave you the IP sets the guidelines for what you need to do to get a grade for your course. Language Lab staff will help you plan and complete any activities required to complete your course.

Can I use the Language Lab programs from home via the internet?

Language Lab programs are only available for use in the Language Lab. However, you can access our website for links to great websites with information and exercises related to English reading, writing, grammar, and punctuation.

Can you give me a copy of the Language Lab programs?

Unfortunately, the programs used in the Language Lab are licensed for use only in the Language Lab.

Can you help me with my Foreign Language class?

Yes, we provide tutoring for students who are taking a Spanish, French, or Italian class.  We also have Rosetta Stone. In addition, we have installed all the videos and lab lessons that accompany your Aventuras Spanish series, Espaces French series, Oggi Italian series and the Japanese for Busy People series.

Can I get online tutoring?

At this time we do not provide online tutoring.

What kind of writing help do you offer?

We can help you develop ideas, structure, search online, or help with a paper you have written when your professor sends you here.

How much help can I get?

This depends on staff availability; generally 30 minutes each session.

How does the staff correct my papers?

We will not write a student’s paper. By this we mean: 1. We will not rewrite complete sentences, but simply underline the sentence and define it as word order or structure error. 2. We will not correct grammar errors, but we can circle errors and identify the type of error. 3. When we identify errors, we will provide the student software or a mini lesson to help the student learn to understand how to correct their grammar/structure errors in the future.

Can I borrow books here? Can I take them home?

Yes. You must leave your Student ID to borrow books; your ID will be returned when the book is returned. However, books are not available for home use.

Why do I need to sign in each time I use the lab?

Keeping track of the number of students who use the lab helps us know how the resources are being used, and helps us plan budget requests. Also, it is a requirement for some classes, or professors sometimes give credit for using the Language Lab and this is the only way we can inform them of the days and times you have visited the lab.

How do I use the computer/where can I get computer help in my first language?

If you are not sure how to use the computer or any of the programs, please ask one of our staff members to give you an individual orientation. We have staff members who speak Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, Amharic and Somali.

How do I log in to language lab software programs?

At this time, students are not required to login to the computers, but if you want to use the specialized software programs, most of them require that you create an account. The individual accounts help you keep track the work you have completed within each program. If you need help creating an account, please ask a staff member for assistance.

How do I create a username & password?

Your username should be your first and last name, with no space in between the two. Your password should be something easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess, such as your birthday or the country you come from. We encourage you to use your student ID number as your password.

What if I accidentally leave something in the lab?

Anything left in the lab goes into our lost and found box. Any staff member can check the box to see if we have your lost items.
