Faculty Project Highlight: Pamela Schmidt, Human Services
Each semester students in Professor Pamela Schmidt’s Introduction to Human Services course identify a global or national crisis and research the agencies providing relief. Working in groups, they evaluate agency histories, analyze funding allocations, look at the amount of direct service available and then swing into action, collecting supplies and raising money. This past semester, Spring 2006, five students worked with the Tennessee-based Soles4Soles Foundation to meet a very basic need in the Darfur region of western Sudan, where a major humanitarian catastrophe has taken the lives of some 450,000 people and displaced more than 2.5 million. Refugees in Darfur’s camps have no access to transportation and must walk miles for water. Shoes for children and adults are in great need. The students not only raised awareness in their communities about this tragic situation, they collected over 100 pairs of gently worn and new shoes and had them shipped to the refugees. Other students in the class worked with CARE, Save the Children Federation and UNICEF, together raising over $1,000 to help the people of Darfur. Professor Schmidt’s students tackle urgent needs close to home, too. Maria Olivero and Monica Souza volunteered at Roxbury’s Community Servings, which prepares and delivers free, hot meals to individuals and families homebound with HIV/AIDS and other acute, life-threatening illness.
