Course Placement and Pretests
All sequential math courses require that the prerequisite course be completed with at least a C grade. The prerequisite requirement may be satisfied by transfer credits or by placement scores on the CPT.
Paper and pencil pretests are available for MAT090, MAT095, MAT195 and MAT197. Please click on the appropriate course number to download the pretest in PDF format.
The pretests can serve four purposes:
-confirm CPT placement results
-provide written verification of the need to change course placement
-give students an overview of personal strengths and deficiencies
-give instructors an overview of class strengths and deficiencies
Pretests should be administered at the first class meeting.
Items on Part I of the Pretest assess students' performance on prerequisite skills. Students who perform poorly on Part I may not have completed the prerequisite course successfully (grade of C or better). These students must repeat the prerequisite course.
Items on Part II of the Pretest assess student's performance on skills included in the semester course objectives. Students who perform well on Part II may be ready for the next sequential course.
Students who need course changes should be sent to their advisors or enrollment services with a signed note requesting a course change and stating the reasons for the change.
