About the ESL Test

The LOEP test helps place students into an appropriate level of Basic or Academic English as a Second Language. The test is computerized and has three parts. The Sentence Meaning test measures how well students understand word meanings. The Reading Comprehension test measures how well students understand what they read. The Language Use test measures how well students understand sentence structure and grammar. Each test has 20 questions. There is no time limit.

In addition to taking the LOEP test, students also complete a short writing sample on a specific topic. There is no time limit for the writing sample. Students may not use a dictionary.

Placement into an ESL level depends on both the LOEP test scores and the writing sample. Students must return to the Assessment Center where they took the test to pick up their results. Results are generally ready within a week of taking the test.
