2008-03-20 - BHCC Receives President’s Honor Roll Award for Service

College Honored for Distinguished Community Service

Boston, March 20, 2008 –The Corporation for National and Community Service named Bunker Hill Community College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.  The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can receive for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.  A total of 14 Massachusetts colleges and universities were recognized as Honor Roll members.  In addition to BHCC, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Bentley College and Babson College were among the recipients of this distinction.

BHCC was recognized for the following programs: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)—free tax preparation is provided by accounting students, under the supervision of faculty, to the public from February through April; Connecting Continents, Countries and Cultures—English as a Second Language (ESL) and computer professors work with students to research those students countries’ of origin, putting together images from the Internet and elsewhere so that each student can put together a book that describes their homeland to fifth graders as a way of promoting diversity; Summer Safety Program—Allied Health students produce presentations on swimming, biking and car travel safety for elementary school children; and, Global or National Catastrophe Relief Research—students identify a catastrophe and then research agencies providing relief, after which they identify an organization/cause to support with donations and volunteerism.

The Honor Roll is jointly sponsored by The Corporation for National and Community Service, through its Learn and Serve America program, and the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Overall, the Community Service Honor Roll awarded six schools with Presidential Awards.

In congratulating the winners, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings said, “Americans rely on our higher education system to prepare students for citizenship and the workforce. We look to institutions like these to provide leadership in partnering with local schools to shape the civic, democratic and economic future of our country.”

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts, enrolling more than 8,800 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC’s students are women. The College also enrolls more than 600 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.
