2008-02-13 - BHCC Hires New VP of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the College Foundation

Boston, February 13, 2008 – Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has appointed Michael R. Seppala as the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the BHCC Foundation.  Mr. Seppala joins BHCC from Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) in Worcester where he has held a similar position since 2003.  He will join the BHCC staff on March 3rd.

“Michael has been instrumental in securing major support for every institution where he has been employed over the course of more than two decades.  It is imperative for all colleges to have a strategic plan for fundraising to supplement their budgets,” said Mary L. Fifield, President, Bunker Hill Community College.  “We consider ourselves fortunate to have someone with Michael Seppala’s track record at the helm of our advancement initiatives.”

“This is an exciting time to be at Bunker Hill Community College as the institution is getting ready to break ground for its first new building on the Charlestown campus since the 1970s.  I am enthusiastic about being on board in time to be a part of that celebration and all of the opportunities that will come about as a result of this new endeavor,” said Seppala.

Mr. Seppala received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a master’s degree from UMass Amherst.  His career spans nearly 25 years in public sector fundraising. During his tenure at QCC, Seppala managed the college’s first comprehensive capital campaign which raised over $4 million. Working closely with the members of the Foundation, he was responsible for QCC first million-dollar gift to name the new Harrington Learning Center and a record gift of over $100,000 from a local alumna.  Before that, Mr. Seppala worked at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for 20 years. As the Director of Development for the School of Education he solicited a $1.5 million gift to support the school’s first endowed professorship and worked with the Director of Planned Giving to negotiate a $3 million gift to endow the school’s first endowed chair.

Bunker Hill Community College is one of the largest community colleges in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 8,800 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester.  BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC’s students are women. The College also enrolls more than 600 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak 75 different languages.
