- BHCC Professor Cited by Governor for Contributions to the Commonwealth

Boston, October 1, 2007 – Bunker Hill Community College Behavioral Sciences Professor Aurora B. Bautista has been named a recipient of this year’s Manuel Carballo Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service.  Dr. Bautista is being recognized, in the words of Governor Deval Patrick, “for selflessly personifying a deep commitment to serving the people of the Commonwealth.”

The Manuel Carballo Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service is named in honor of the late Massachusetts Secretary of Human Services.  It is given annually to state employees who exemplify the highest standards of public service.  Dr. Bautista will be receiving one of ten Carballo Awards this year at a ceremony with the Governor on October 5th.

Bautista, a cultural anthropologist, is being honored for her work at Bunker Hill Community College – both inside the classroom and outside of it.  Her lesson plans weave social consciousness into the class-work, and her commitment to diversity and cultural awareness extend to the many boards and committees she serves on.  Dr. Bautista is helping BHCC students increase their cultural competence for living in a diverse society by encouraging them to observe the customs of the many cultures that surround them in the Greater Boston area.

“I was surprised to learn about this honor,” said Bautista. “It is the ultimate compliment to be recognized for doing what I love—teaching and being involved in campus initiatives that build a stronger learning environment for our students.”

Aurora Bautista has been teaching at Bunker Hill Community College since 2004.  Prior to that, she taught at the University of the Philippines for 14 years.  Dr. Bautista holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of the Philippines, a master’s of arts degree in Anthropology from the New School for Social Research in New York and a doctoral degree in Anthropology, also from the University of the Philippines. Her teaching and research interests are centered on cultural anthropology, sociology of the family, urban sociology and social programs with a focus on consumerism, cultural diversity, work, gender and development.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 8,600 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. Some 1,700 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC’s students are women. The College also enrolls more than 600 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak more than 75 different languages.
