2007-07-08 - New England College Council Scholarship Goes to BHCC Student

Boston, July 8, 2007 – Bunker Hill Community College psychology major Emoke M. Kibedi has received one of six scholarships the New England College Council gives each year. The $750 award will help Kibedi continue her work toward an associate degree at Bunker Hill Community College next fall.

Born in Romania, Kibedi came to the United States with a certificate in childhood education and experience as a kindergarten teacher. She began her teaching career with the common image of the early years as carefree and happy but soon noticed “the darker side” of children’s lives. “It became clear to me,” she says, “that a lot of children need special care.” Following completion of her degree at Bunker Hill Community College, Kibedi plans to transfer to Wheelock College to pursue a bachelor’s degree in child psychology.

The Peabody-based New England College Council awards scholarships on a competitive basis to two-year college students throughout the region. Criteria stress high academic standing and involvement in civic activities. Ms. Kibedi’s grade point average stands at 3.95, with 4.0 as a perfect score. As part of a service learning program at Bunker Hill Community College, she volunteered at the Boston Resource Center, where she offered math tutoring to people with psychiatric conditions who aspire to earn a GED diploma.

“Emoke demonstrates a passionate commitment to serving the less fortunate through the field of mental health counseling,” said Associate Professor of Behavioral Science Maria K. Puente in recommending Kibedi for the scholarship. Noting that Kibedi’s volunteer community service work far exceeded the requirements of her psychology course, Puente added, “Emoke is one of those rare students who blend an excellent mind with an excellent heart.”

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 8,500 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. Some 1,700 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. The College also enrolls more than 600 international students who come from more than 95 countries and speak more than 75 different languages.
