2007-05-30 - BHCC Student Wins State Achievement Award
Boston, May 30, 2007 – Trayce Booth, a Dorchester mother who has earned two allied health certificates and is now studying liberal arts at Bunker Hill Community College, has won the 2007 Outstanding Student Achievement Award from Massachusetts Women in Public Higher Education. The award includes a $500 scholarship.
“Trayce is living proof that will-power, resolve and commitment get results. At Bunker Hill Community College we encourage our students to imagine the possibilities; Trayce has done just that and as a result is being recognized for her accomplishments with this award,” said Mary L. Fifield, BHCC President.
“Trayce’s courage and determination demonstrate the human potential community colleges support. Trayce is a hero,” said Renae Lias Claffey, who chaired the Student Recognition Committee for Women in Higher Education, a professional group. The organization each year solicits one nomination from each of the state’s 29 public higher education institutions and presents an award to one student from each sector – community colleges, state colleges and the University of Massachusetts.
Trayce, who overcame economic difficulties and involvement with drugs and gangs, plans to graduate from BHCC in 2008. She wants to pursue a degree in American Sign Language Interpretation at Northeastern University. “Bunker Hill has supported me all the way,” Trayce said. “Bunker Hill let me combine my interests in healthcare and serving the deaf.”
At BHCC, Trayce has been a leader in the Parents’ Association, and she is a senior mentor in the Student Success Program. When BHCC won a major grant to fund the Difficult Dialogues program, Trayce became one of the Cultural Ambassadors to the program.
