2007-05-29 - BHCC Professor Andres Reyes Wins U.S. Institute of Peace Fellowship
Boston, May 29, 2007 – Bunker Hill Community College professor Andres Reyes has won a prestigious 2007 Fellowship at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. Reyes, who teaches English as a Second Language at BHCC, will travel this month to Washington to begin a seminar with 17 other Fellows selected through a national competition.
The Institute of Peace, an independent, nonpartisan institution funded by the U.S. Congress, works to increase peace building capacity through training and direct peace intervention around the globe. The seminar this year focuses on “Global Peace and Security in Community Colleges and the Communities They Serve.”
“Community college students come from conflict zones, from Ethiopia, Zambia and Colombia,” said David J. Smith of the Institute for Peace. “So many students today are fleeing wars and terrorism in their home countries. Higher education must deal with what these students have left behind.” For the community college program, the institute selects faculty from many disciplines, according to Smith.
“Professor Reyes went through a very competitive process, and we are very impressed with his background,” said Smith. “He comes from the ESL side, but he’s going to be in the room with political scientists, sociologists, even scientists. You need everyone at the table to make international conflict resolution work.”
“These skills are essential to our curriculum for our diverse student body, and I am sure Andy’s experience at the Institute will benefit us all. We are very proud of his achievement,” said Mary L. Fifield, BHCC president.
“The true borders today are bigotry and racism and lack of understanding, not actual fences. Education today must build these cultural skills,” said Reyes. “I look forward to working on these issues with the other Fellows.”
