2007-05-23 - Senator Jarrett T. Barrios to Give BHCC Commencement Address

Boston, May 23, 2007 – Massachusetts State Senator Jarrett T. Barrios will be the keynote speaker at Bunker Hill Community College’s 33rd Commencement Exercise on Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.  The Senator, a proponent for the advancement of public education, will receive the President’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his extraordinary commitment and service to the College at the ceremony in which he will be addressing the more than 600 graduates expected to attend with their families.

“Senator Barrios is a leader who has demonstrated time and again his commitment to education as an equalizing opportunity.  His unwavering dedication to our College and its students came through loud and clear when he sponsored legislation in the Massachusetts Senate that paved the way for BHCC to build a Health and Wellness Center, the first new building on our Charlestown campus since 1973,” said Mary L. Fifield, Ph.D., President of Bunker Hill Community College.  “It is in recognition of his commitment to BHCC and with appreciation for his continued support that we are bestowing the President’s Distinguished Service Award to him.”

Elected to the House of Representatives in 1998, Barrios won the election to the Senate in 2002.  Senator Barrios is the Chair of the Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.  He has led bans on handguns and assault rifles and obtained $11 million in funding for community programs to provide alternatives to gangs and violence.  With mayors and community leaders, Barrios has worked to get a Green Line extension through Somerville with a spur to Union Square.

The son of a carpenter and a social worker, Senator Barrios graduated with honors from Harvard University and obtained his law degree from Georgetown University. Barrios, who lives in Cambridge with his family, represents Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Charlestown, and parts of Allston, Brighton, Revere, Saugus and Somerville.

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls more than 8,400 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. Some 1,700 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth.
