2007-01-22 - BHCC Receives $45,000 Grant from the Boston Foundation
Boston, January 22, 2007 – Bunker Hill Community College has been awarded a grant for $45,000 from the Boston Foundation to develop and pilot an English for Speakers of Other Languages Program in the College’s Welcome Back Center. Welcome Back, which helps internationally educated nurses become licensed in Massachusetts, is a collaborative effort between BHCC, Roxbury Community College, MassBay Community College, the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.
“The nursing shortage is a known problem for Massachusetts and the nation. Our healthcare workforce additionally needs to improve its linguistic and cultural competencies,” said Mary L. Fifield, President of Bunker Hill Community College. “The Welcome Back Center helps internationally educated nurses, who were experienced workers before immigrating to the United States to become licensed bilingual and bicultural nurses in Massachusetts. Not only does this program help to alleviate the nursing shortage, it improves upon the quality of healthcare for the state’s diverse citizens. We appreciate this grant from the Boston Foundation and their partnership in our endeavor.”
“English proficiency is one of the essential requirements internationally educated nurses need to attain in order to get licensed here. The money that we receive from the Boston Foundation will help enhance our offerings and remove an obstacle from the path of success for the nurses we assist,” said Dan Lam, Executive Director of the Welcome Back Center.
In April, BHCC received a $20,000 grant from the Polaroid Fund at the Boston Foundation for the Chelsea Community Education and Support Initiative, which develops adult education and literacy services to help victims of domestic violence gain employment. The Boston Foundation has an endowment of close to $770 million. Last year, the Foundation made grants of $63.9 million to non–profit organizations and received gifts of $73.6 million. The Boston Foundation, which is made up of 850 separate charitable funds, also serves as a civic leader, convener and sponsor of special initiatives designed to build community.
