2006-11-28 - BHCC to Build New Health and Wellness Center

Bunker Hill Community College announced today that it will build a new 48,000 square-foot Health and Wellness Center at its main campus in Charlestown. The new Health and Wellness Center will house academic programs to meet workforce needs in healthcare fields such as nursing, medical imaging, allied health, respiratory therapy and surgical technology. The new building will co-locate healthcare programs in a single facility that will provide state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories and enable the College to increase its successful track record in contributing to the Commonwealth’s healthcare workforce.

This will be the first new building on the Charlestown campus since the College opened in 1973. The estimated total cost of $22.7 million for this project includes renovations to an existing building that will provide a one-stop student services center from registration through textbook purchases. The new structure will also provide additional faculty and administrative offices, an adjunct faculty center, a gymnasium and a fitness center. With an enrollment that has grown to more than 8,200 students, the College has sought construction of a new facility on its Charlestown campus for nearly ten years.

Senator Jarrett Barrios initiated legislation for the $8 million spending authorization bill that passed the Legislature in late October. Representative Eugene O’Flaherty and Representative Robert DeLeo, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, were instrumental in House action to approve the legislation. Members of the Bunker Hill Community College Board of Trustees were strong advocates for passage of the legislation. The Student Government Association started a building fund six years ago to sustain the effort. The Commonwealth’s Division of Capital Asset Management continues to work closely with the College to ensure this project’s success.

State law requires that the Legislature approve borrowing by state institutions of higher education. The bill permits the College to borrow money from the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities Authority to construct the new facility. Governor Romney’s signature made the bill law and gives the College the needed authorization to proceed with its plans to expand.
