BOSTON — December 9, 2004 — Heralded as "an alchemist of the street [who turns] lead into gold," internationally renowned book artist and printmaker Peter Madden is featured in the solo retrospective "Peter Madden / Preserved," at the newly inaugurated art gallery at Bunker Hill Community College , running through January 28, 2005 .
Containing more than 60 works spanning the last three decades, Madden gives us entree to his world of found-objects, created languages of image and iconography and one-of-kind books and prints that find inspiration in everything from medieval illuminated manuscripts to modern-day homoerotica
This show includes Madden’s signature, one-of-a-kind artist's books and a range of prints and alternative photographic works. "At its core, my work takes the everyday and commonplace and puts them on a pedestal," says Madden of his work, largely composed of found wood, scraps of metal, brown paper bags and the flotsam of his and others' daily lives. "I find fascination and pure fun in taking what most people think is used and useless and giving it new life often a life that is much more compelling than its original purpose.
"This is all an experiment—everything I do is a step towards something else," concluded Madden.
Madden's works are exhibited and collected throughout the United States, including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Harvard University, the Center for Book Arts New York and numerous private collections. He received his training at Massachusetts College of Art, Pratt Institute and Parson's School of Design.
The media and public are invited to a reception at the gallery with the artist on December 16, 2004 , from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
