Bunker Hill Community College Art Gallery is proud to present the work of Northeastern University ’s African American Studies Department Master Artists-in-Residence Program (AAMARP) in a group exhibit entitled NEW MASTERS OF ART. Organized for Black History Month, the exhibit honors the visual arts heritage of Boston ’s African American Artists. Curated by Gallery Director Laura Montgomery, the exhibit affords a rich expression of ideas through photography, painting, textiles, sculpture, and drawing.

The Amistad: An Emancipation Quilt by nationally renowned artist L’Merchie Frazier chronicles and celebrates the historic Amistad incident and was featured at the Moakley Courthouse during the Freedom Schooner Amistad’s visit to Boston in 2003.

Nine photographs from acclaimed photographer Don West’s series “Portraits of Purpose” profile social, political and arts leaders from Boston’s Black Community. Elma Lewis, Mel King, Chuck Turner, and Anne Hobson Pilot are a few of the extraordinary subjects among the striking black and white images. Kofi Kayiga, whose solo show SpiritHue was the new BHCC Art Gallery ’s inaugural exhibit, is represented by three small vibrant acrylic paintings.
