Monica Martinez is of a “generation where blended cultures seem to create a new culture or lack thereof”; hence her interest in creating objects and sculptures that come from her search for the cultural intersections found in her mixed world. Working primarily in metals, paper mache, and plaster, following fabrication processes and hand-building techniques Martinez facilitates the creation of a visual language between western and native cultures.

Contrasts and opposites have become her main subject. Abstraction/figurative, narrative/minimal, sculpture/function, hard/soft, and private/public themes are her inspirations. Her work is a celebration of existence and a trademark of the time she lives in.

Martinez creates art within the framework of this modern mix of fused cultures without forgetting her roots--“vengo de papalotla, mariposa de obsidiana.”

Born in Mexico City in 1975, Martinez immigrated to Boston in 1997 where she received her BFA in sculpture from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2004. Her work has been exhibited on both coasts of the US, in Mexico, and can be found at the Harvard University Peabody Museum as well as in private collections.
