The Bunker Hill Community College Campaign for Health & Wellness

The combination of declining state support and unprecedented enrollment growth creates a major financial challenge for BHCC, which is committed to affordability and access. The options of large increases in tuition and capping enrollment run counter to the very mission of the College. To fulfill its mission, maintain its quality programs and continue to meet the evolving needs of the Commonwealth, BHCC must turn to private support. Bunker Hill Community College is now raising funds to support a new state-of-the-art Health & Wellness Center. The first new building on the Charlestown Campus in three decades, the Center will co-locate all of the College’s healthcare programs—programs that train the nurses and Allied Health professionals essential to Greater Boston’s healthcare industry.

The College’s First Green Building

Imagine the possibilities….The Bunker Hill Community College Health & Wellness Center is a two-story, 48,000-square-foot- building that houses the BHCC Health Professions and the Nurse Education Program, a Gymnasium and Fitness Center. Its state-of-the-art facilities include an Acute Respiratory Skills Unit and Acute Critical Skills Unit, an Ultrasound Unit, a Medical Imaging Resource Room, Medical Imaging Computer Room, and a Basic Skills Unit. The Center also has three “smart” classrooms, two x-ray stations, a Conference Room and 22 faculty offices.

The BHCC Health & Wellness Center plays a vital role in addressing the growing healthcare needs of the Greater Boston area. The Center strengthens academic and student support activities, and enables the College’s basketball teams to hold their home games on campus. As the College’s first green building, the BHCC Health & Wellness Center makes a landmark contribution to supporting environmental awareness.

An Evening at the Hampshire House
BHCC Foundation’s annual fundraiser boosts scholarships, textbook assistance and emergency funds

As they have for the past twenty years, more than 140 guests swept into Boston’s elegant Hampshire House on April 29, 2009 for BHCC Foundation’s annual fundraiser. More than $132,000 in funds was raised at this year’s event and were used to support an array of scholarships, the Textbook Assistance Program, which lends books to students who cannot afford them, and the College’s new Student Emergency Assistance Fund.

Initiated with a grant from MetLife Foundation, the Student Emergency Assistance Fund is one way the College is helping students cope with the economic downturn. In all, the College awarded $63,000 in grants to meet the urgent needs of 87 BHCC students, with the aim of helping students remain in school during hard times.

During the 2009 spring semester, the Fund provided one student with money to replace a lost MBTA pass and helped another, who is a single mother, when she was laid off from her job. It also provided a student with funds for new eyeglasses to replace a broken pair, helped a student repair the car needed to get to work and class , and provided another student with money urgently needed to pay for cancer treatments.

As he does each year, Thomas A. Kershaw, owner of the Hampshire House – famed inspiration for the television program Cheers — opened the Beacon Hill mansion to Bunker Hill Community College supporters.
