Community Education

Community Education non credit courses are designed for students of varying ages, professional experiences and education levels to assist in learning new skills, or enhancing existing ones. Open enrollment programs are targeted to community needs and interests and are available at convenient times at the Charlestown and Chelsea campuses. Customized programs are also available.

Courses/Programs
Basic English as a Second Language Classes
To register for any of these classes, students must first take a free placement test in the Charlestown Assessment Center, Room B118. The spectrum includes classes from literacy, conversation, and writing to computer literacy. Financial aid is not available. There is no residency requirement for taking these classes.

General Educational Development Preparation Classes
GED, GED Online, and GED en español classes are now offered. Are you ready for the GED? Do you think you are ready for the GED but want to be sure before you register and pay the state test fee? Find out by taking the free College Placement Test in the Charlestown Assessment Center in Room B118. 

Want a new career? Apply for this certificate training option with hiring demands in a specific industry:

  • Ophthalmic Assistant in the medical field includes an internship component

CPR for Health Care Providers Certification 
The four hour class is a requirement for BHCC nursing students.  This class covers the basic skills needed to treat air breathing, and cardiac emergencies in adult, children, and infants.  Included in the skills are one- and two-person CPR, use of a mask for ventilation and the use of automated external defibrillator. Upon successful completion, the student is issued an American Heart Association CPR card at the Health Care Provider Level and is valid for two years. 

Computer Classes in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access 2007

Motorcycle Class is offered on weekends from April to September.        

Gatlin Education Services:
Online Courses in healthcare, business, construction/automotive technology, networking and CompTIA™ Certification Prep, and Microsoft Certification Prep. For more information, go to http://www.gatlineducation.com/bhcc/.

Academic Enrichment & Enhancement Studies (AEES)
For the fourth year in a row, we hold this program for international students and faculty, especially from Denmark. The following three schools have participated:  Skanderborg-Odder Center for Uddannelse,  Handerslev Business College, and Minerva Business Academy. The two, three or four week study program consists of customized academic instruction, U.S. company visits, presentation of team project work and cultural excursions. The goals of the students are to perfect their English Language skills and create a business plan. This program is open to domestic shools/students as well.

Community Partnerships
Charlestown Mothers Association is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the community of Charlestown for all families. BHCC has developed customized offerings for them.

Community Center for Entreprenuership:  ww.bhcc.mass.edu/entrepreneurship.  Launch a new career with Entrepreneurship 101:  Start your own business; Write a business plan; Finance; Marketing; Supervisory skills

NEW:                                                                                                                                                                       Professional Film & Production Training Program:  in the field of Visual Media Arts, learn to write a script and compose a storyboard with an Apple computer and digital camera adding music, etc.

Preparing for Birth & Baby 101, Childbirth, Breastfeeding & Newborn Care Class:  this class is a comprehensive childbirth class that covers all aspects of pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum including the "how to" breastfeeding and the first six weeks at home with the newborn.
