The Division of Arts & Sciences oversees the General Education course curriculum and degree requirements and programs at the College, as these relate to the College’s curricula, degrees, and academic divisional departments overall. Under our Division, these department subjects include: Behavioral Science, Creative Arts, English, English As A Second Language, Foreign Languages, History & Social Sciences, Honors Program, Humanities, Mathematics, and Science & Engineering.
We also house the College’s Honors Program led by Lucius Salisbury III, full-time professor in our English Department, and Joan Brenner, adjunct instructor in our Science & Engineering Department. Also reporting to the Arts & Sciences Division is the College’s International Center, managed by Director Vilma Tafawa, which successfully works with and has assisted in enrolling international students at the College from approximately 95 countries worldwide.
In addition to centrally overseeing approximately 70 full-time faculty, the Division of Arts & Sciences also collaborates each academic semester with over 200 adjunct instructors who participate in teaching credit courses to our students during weeknights, weekends, weekdays, and long-distance, at both the College’s Charlestown and Chelsea campuses, as well as at its satellite locations in Cambridge, East Boston, Somerville, and Boston’s South End. While most of these courses are classroom-based, many of these also take advantage of the College’s extensive online services and resources including its Language, Mathematics and Science labs. Our hybrid courses include an online component in addition to the existing lecture-based curriculum, and some of our instructors teach online Web and correspondence-based External Studies courses under the umbrella of the Distance Learning College, as well.
