Will someone help me choose my classes?
Advisors are available to help students learn how to understand program requirements and how to navigate the registration process. Students are responsible for choosing courses applicable to their program and selecting appropriate course meeting times and formats. Advising staff are available to assist students during the registration process.

How many credits do I need to take to be a full time student?
Students who carry 12 or more credit hours in a fall or spring semester or six credit hours in a summer or mini-session are full-time students.

What should I do before seeing my Advisor?
Advising is a shared responsibility between the Advisor and the student.

Current and returning students assigned to a faculty member or professional staff member: All faculty and professional staff Advisors have a designated office, email, and phone number. Students should contact their assigned Advisor to schedule a meeting time convenient to both parties. Advising can also be accomplished over the phone or via email for students and Advisors who have scheduling conflicts.

Current and returning students assigned to the Advising Center: Staff at the Advising/Counseling Center are available to sit down with you to discuss your goals and plans in a relaxed setting until the start of registration for the following semester/session. Please come prepared with a set of questions and please be prepared to discuss your academic and career goals. Academic Advisors will assist you in program selection and understanding your program requirements, however, Academic Advisors will not “pick” classes for you nor will they plan your semester schedule.

Once semester/session registration begins, the availability of walk-in advising times may be more limited.  Current and returning students can always access advising assistance during registration periods at the Self-Service Counter in the Main Lobby of the B Building or register online via any computer with internet access. Advising Staff will be available at the Self-Service Counter to help you access your online services/Web Advisor account.

New matriculated/accepted who have never attended BHCC or any other college will be invited to attend a Rapid Registration Session (College Placement Testing, the CPT, should be taken prior to attending Rapid Registration.  Transfer students and readmitted students should have either taken the CPT (College Placement Test) or come to the Advising/Counseling Center with transcripts from another college or university.

New Students should consider the following:

  • What do I hope to accomplish at Bunker Hill Community College?
  • What programs of study am I considering?
  • What college or university do I want to attend after Bunker Hill Community College?
  • What kinds of jobs/skills have I enjoyed in the past?
  • What have been my favorite academic subjects?
  • What kinds of things do I enjoy doing in my spare time? Do they relate to any particular program of study or profession?
  • Are there any outside issues I need to consider when planning for my education? Work? Family responsibilities? Military obligations? Disabilities? Commuting time?
  • When do I want to attend my courses? Days? Nights? Weekends? Distance?
  • If I’m an independent learner with excellent time management skills, do I want to take a course in an alternative format such as a web course, hybrid course, a home study course or a course offered in the Center for Self Directed Learning?
  • What course format is best for my learning style? Distance? Lecture? Web? Independent study?
