Welcome to the Allied Health Department

The mission of the Bunker Hill Community College Allied Health Certificate Programs (AHCP) is to provide students with the education and training they need to become healthcare providers, while focusing on their needs to gain the skills required for success in the workplace, continued education, and achieving long-term goals.

Programs include Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Medical Interpreting, Nurse Aide/Home Health Aide, and Emergency Medical Technician.

Program Overviews:

MEDICAL ASSISTANT
This two-semester program prepares students to function as members of a healthcare delivery team and to perform administrative and clinical duties. Students learn to take vital signs as well as basic phlebotomy and EKG skills and, upon successful completion, receive a BHCC Certificate and Healthcare Provider CPR Certification. Career outlook: Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, health maintenance organizations, and physicians' offices as multi-skilled workers, medical assistants, medical aides, clinical assistants, and clinical practice assistants.

PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN
This two-semester program prepares students to deliver direct patient care through classroom teaching, lab practice, and actual clinical experience in hospitals and long-term care facilities. The program prepares students for a variety of positions in health care. Students learn to take vital signs as well as basic phlebotomy and EKG skills and, upon successful completion, receive a BHCC Certificate, Nurse Aide, Home Health Aide, and Healthcare Provider CPR Certifications. Career outlook: Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals, chronic care facilities, and the home environment as multi-skilled workers, patient care technicians, patient care associates, medical aides, certified nursing assistants, and home health aides.

PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN
This one-semester, plus internship program prepares students to perform blood collection by venipuncture and introduces them to basic laboratory techniques. Students are prepared to take a national certification exam. Graduates receive a BHCC Certificate. Career outlook: Graduates of this program qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, health maintenance organizations and laboratories as phlebotomy technicians.

MEDICAL INTERPRETING
This two-semester, 18 credit course of study prepares students to serve as medical interpreters in a variety of healthcare settings. Students are prepared to take a national certification exam. Career outlook: Graduates qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, chronic care facilities, and health maintenance organizations as medical interpreters.

NURSE AIDE/HOME HEALTH AIDE
This one-semester, 7-credit course of study prepares students to deliver direct patient care in long-term care facilities and the home environment. Students are prepared to become licensed by the state as Certified Nurse Aides and receive a BHCC Home Health Aide Certificate. They do NOT receive a BHCC Certificate. Career outlook: Students who pass the Nurse Aide exam qualify for positions in long-term care facilities and the home environment.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN
This is a 7-credit course that conforms to the EMT-B national standard curriculum, as adopted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a pre-requisite for taking the certification exam.
