General Goals
Upon completion of this course, students will have mastered enough English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to enroll in BESL 001 and/or BESL 002 courses. Furthermore, students will be able to demonstrate some listening & speaking skills as well as limited comprehension of very basic reading and writing materials.
Specific Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. use language for basic functions: greetings, requests, apologies, excuses, permission, leave-taking, etc.
2. engage in simple conversations on everyday topics
3. identify everyday institutions and learn some vocabulary associated with them: hospitals, schools, supermarkets, restaurants, offices, etc.
4. ask for and give simple street or travel directions using simple prepositions
5. ask for meanings of unknown words and expressions
6. learn and use vocabulary regarding parts of the body and expressions of health and general well-being
7. read product labels, building signs and traffic signs and symbols
8. contact the fire department, police department and hospital to describe a fire, police, or medical emergency
9. listen to and express basic numbers including phone numbers
10. talk and write about units of time
11. use vocabulary for money and simple financial transactions
12. provide personal information orally and on a simple application form, including name, address, date of birth, and marital status
13. make appointments
14. use limited oral communication required for entry level jobs
15. understand teacher directions
16. answer simple questions in writing
17. discuss and write about everyday activities
18. use vocabulary regarding clothing
19. describe various rooms of the house or apartment
20. describe the weather and seasons
21. discuss different forms of transportation—cars, buses, trains, taxis, airplanes—and describe how he/she gets to work
22. describe physical appearance and personality characteristics of friends and family
23. write about a photograph or illustration
24. read, understand, and answer questions about a short simplified passage with simple sentences (orally and in writing)
25. show some knowledge of spelling
26. use correct word order for simple sentences and questions
27. recognize common sight words
28. read, write and recite alphabet
29. use basic pronunciation skills (distinguish vowel and consonant sounds)
30. use print and cursive writing
31. write on a line
32. write upper and lower case letters and use appropriately
