Practicum Application Orientation Meetings
Orientation meetings are held during the spring semester for Early Childhood Development and Human Services Program students ready to take the practicum courses. To be eligible for these courses, students must be at the end of their programs and will be ready to graduate during the following spring semester. Application is made to the department for enrollment into the Practicum courses (ECE 120-121 or HSV 120-121-122) during the spring semester only. All practicum activity must start in the Fall and continue through spring (for ECDev students) and summer term A (for HSV students). A CORI check is required of all practicum students. There are other requirements for enrollment. For more information concerning these requirements and application procedures, contact the Department Chair, Early Childhood Coordinator, or Human Services Coordinator.
Department of Early Education and Care Building Careers Grant Activity
The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care has awarded BHCC a continuation grant to provide further assistance to Early Care and Education teachers with scholarship support. The Workforce Development Department and the Early Childhood, Education and Human Services Department are working together to offer an additional semester of coursework during the spring semester. Two courses (MAT 195-College Algebra and ECE 115-Supervision in Early Childhood Education) will be offered to those Building Careers students eligible to enroll. Contact Rita Rzezuski and Jack Chan (617-228-2157) for further information regarding the grant and enrollment procedures.
Graduation Applications
Those students completing all course requirements at the end of fall semester will be eligible to apply for graduation at the Enrollment Services Desk (B building lobby) during the month of October. Those completing requirements in spring semester must apply during the month of February. Students with only the final HSV practicum requirement to complete during the summer term A session may participate in the graduation ceremony in late spring and will receive their diploma upon completion of the final course at the end of summer semester.
New Certification Programs in Human Services Options
The Human Services Program offers Certificate options within its Human Services Associate degree program. Coursework in these options can be applied to the Human Services Associates degree.
Two Options are now available.
Professional Human Services Option has been available for some time and allows students to study the broad base of human services and apply these to many different areas of direct care in social services in the community.
A second, new certificate is now available. The program is the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Option in Human Services. This certificate program prepares students for direct service jobs in a specialty area of Human Services providing services to those with mental illness. Students completing the certificate may qualify for careers serving those with mental illness. Work may take place in social welfare, mental health, or community-based human services organizations. Multi-age populations are served. Job outlook is excellent with many agencies offering employment in this area of specialty.
A third certificate is being planned and will focus on Community Health Work. This certificate program will prepare students for direct service jobs in a specialty area of Community Health Work. In collaboration with the Department of Allied Health, this program will combine health related coursework with social service courses. This Certificate Option is expected to be available to students in fall, 2008.

The Bunker Hill Community College students enrolled in HSV 101, Introduction to Human Services, are currently involved in 9 week research project addressing the human rights violations in Darfur. Their research and power point presentations will be featured at the Massachusetts Statewide Undergraduate Research Conference at the University of Massachusetts, Commonwealth Honors College in Amherst, Massachusetts in May 2009.
Student Abstract for the Massachusetts Statewide Undergraduate Research Conference at University of Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Honors College:
DARFUR: DESTINATION EDUCATION:
HSV 101 Human Service Students: Erika Bareiss, Adelle Cataldo, Susan Coston, Brie Dorsey, Joseph Foley, Darnell Hydes
In a country torn apart by a multi-faceted crisis involving many human rights violations, our project examines the need to continue providing education to those who have fled their homes and land to survive in displacement camps. With the educational system compromised, the refugees of Darfur risk ongoing victimization for future generations. The Darfuri people revere education and we understand its integral role in determining a people's future. Through the support of The Darfur Schools Program directed by The Darfur Peace and Development Organization, meeting the goal of our fund raising initiative will help provide training for teachers, school supplies, living salaries for teachers and school staff members, the provision of clean water, building materials and the support to open more Schools of Peace in North Darfur and Chad.
