This interdisciplinary course examines the nature of our social minds and how they are shaped by culture. We will look at the expression of culture and cultural values in our social institutions, including business, education and the family.
Students will be asked to examine their own cultural “filter,” and cross-cultural comparisons will be made with members of the class. Students will also examine how centuries-old cultural values may be changing in the context of globalization and technology. Readings will be drawn from scientific literature (evolutionary biology) and works of fiction and non-fiction.
