Academic Advising:

When will new students meet with an Advisor?

Once accepted to BHCC, students receive information in their acceptance package about logging on to the College Portal and directions for registering for a Start Smart Orientation.  Our Start Smart Orientation Program is required for all new students (new to college, transfer students who are new to BHCC and readmitted students who have been away from the College for two or more semesters). Students attending Start Smart Orientation will meet and work with our Orientation Mentors to begin creating your LifeMap. Our Start Smart Orientation Program also includes your first advising session where you will have the opportunity to talk with an Advisor and register for courses.

BHCC offers three types of Start Smart Orientation Sessions:

  • English as Second Language Sessions (ESL) designed for students who placed into Academic Level 1, 2 or 3 on the College Placement Test (CPT) and will be enrolling in English as Second Language (ESL) courses.
  • New Student Sessions designed for students who have never attended BHCC or any other college.

Transfer and Readmitted Student Sessions designed for student who have attended another college or university at any time or who have attended BHCC in the past.

When will new students be assigned an Advisor?

During the first semester of study, students accepted into a degree or certificate program will be assigned for academic advising to either

  • a specific Advisor,
  • their Learning Community Seminar Instructor,
  • their Department of Study,
  • to the Advising Center or
  • to an ESL faculty member or to ESL Advising (located in Room B118) for students studying English as a Second Language.

Assigned Advisor can be found in the My Profile section of the Academic Profile Menu of WebAdvisor in your Portal account.

What does an Advisor do?

The Advisor's role includes, but is not limited to, helping students plan their academic course load, continue developing their LifeMap, monitor their academic progress, and to serve as a resource for career planning and academic and student support services. Students should visit the Portal and check their BHCC e-mail daily for information on group advising sessions and other important advising related announcements.

For additional advising information and resources, currently enrolled students can visit the Portal.
