This clinic will provide real-world examples of how to utilize outside consultants in the climate action planning process. Specific examples will summarize recent work with consultants at Bunker Hill Community College that have helped to reduce energy usage and carbon emissions, encouraged the adoption of renewable energy sources and developed long-range climate action planning strategies.

Steven Baumgartner, PE, CEM, HBDP, LEED AP is an Associate with Buro Happold in New York. He has been involved in design and research of various energy simulation/analysis, and sustainable HVAC design through a number of projects in various stages design and construction. Steven provides environmental and energy expertise and is responsible for building and site-wide environmental strategies, conceptual design studies, sustainable design research, and energy/carbon audits and evaluation. He runs multiple sustainability and energy consultancy projects throughout the world. He is on the local Board of ASHRAE-NY and contributes to various society level activities. Steven also teaches and lectures at colleges and universities throughout the country including a new three part class he developed on Sustainability at the new Center for Urban Real Estate at Columbia University.

Dave MacNeil

David MacNeil is an Associate with Buro Happold, a global multi- disciplinary engineering and design company. At Buro Happold, he provides consulting services in mechanical system design, sustainable system design, building energy modeling, and project management.

David has over fifteen years experience in the design of mechanical, plumbing and fire protection systems. He brings a wealth of knowledge in all areas of mechanical engineering and has a broad exposure to many facility types. David's strengths include project management, system design and interdisciplinary coordination. He has a Bachelors Degree in Marine Engineering from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and a graduate certificate in Fire Protection Engineering from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Jesse Stallions
Energy Engineer, Sebesta Blomberg
Mr. Stallions is an Energy Engineer with Sebesta Blomberg in Woburn, MA. He has over eight years of experience in the field of equipment assessment and facility energy management systems. Mr. Stallions has a strong background in industrial utility equipment including boilers, high-energy piping, chillers, as well as HVAC, lighting, and other aspects of building resource efficiency. Specific areas of expertise include commissioning and retro-commissioning, controls and calculation of energy and water savings for retrofits and operational changes to colleges and universities. Recent projects include work at Bunker Hill Community College, Northern Essex Community College, UMass-Dartmouth, University of Connecticut and Salem State University. He holds a B.S degree in Facilities and Environmental Engineering from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

John Stokes
Sustainability Specialist, Sebesta Blomberg
As a LEED Accredited Professional, Mr. Stokes specializes in LEED for Existing Buildings and works with building owners and operators to assess and improve facilities performance and operations. Mr. Stokes also provides sustainability master planning and reporting for various state agencies and college campuses under Massachusetts Executive Order 484 and the ACUPCC program, including MA DOER, Massport, and Holyoke Community College. He is currently serving as a Technical Advisor for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) STARS Water Working Group and has authored articles for Journal of Green Building and APPA's Facilities Manager magazine.

Prior to his work with Sebesta Blomberg, Mr. Stokes spent 9 years consulting within the product and technology development industry in Cambridge, MA. He holds degrees in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell University and Environmental Management from Harvard University.

Paul Wolff
Director of Sustainability and Executive Staff, Bunker Hill Community College
Paul Wolff has worked in the field of sustainable development since 1998. He was the first intern selected by Leith Sharp, famed Director of Harvard University's Green Campus Initiative and was responsible for the school's first greenhouse gas inventory that included over 500 buildings. Paul earned a Master of Architecture Degree at Harvard and awarded the rare honor of "Distinction" for his adaptive reuse project designed for the Kitchen, an iconic performing arts institution located in Manhattan, New York. He has also since been named "Architect of the Year" by Commercial Builder Architect Magazine which recognized young architecture professionals throughout the country.

On a regional level, Paul has managed multi-state educational outreach projects that have reached over 40,000 students, teachers, administrators and staff located in dozens of high schools and colleges with a message of energy conservation and sustainability. Fundraising and marketing efforts associated with these programs have leveraged several million dollars in donations that have been distributed directly to dozens of regional vocational technical schools located throughout the New England region. In Massachusetts, these efforts were instrumental in recent revisions to the Department of Education's Curriculum Frameworks (Environmental Standard 5F.05a) that now mandate the integration of renewable energy and energy efficiency related content into multiple subject areas.

As a LEED Accredited Professional, Paul has also provided project management support for clients such as Fordham University, Ohio State, Plymouth State, Lorain County Community College, the College of William and Mary and the University of New Haven. His work with college campuses has also included the development of sustainability focused credit and non-credit courses, the creation of sustainability and energy conservation focused degree programs. He is currently the Director of Sustainability and a member of the Executive Cabinet at Bunker Hill Community College.

Amy Cabaniss, Josh Stoffel, Connecticut College

One of the most powerful ways to promote sustainability on college campuses is to engage students. This clinic will discuss successful strategies for engaging students and utilizing the power of behavioral change and other psychological tools in the pursuit of effective conservation and sustainability practices. Students are an important tool for sustainability leadership at any college and can be instrumental in fostering change.

Amy Cabaniss
Assistant Director of the Goodwin-Niering Center of the Environment at Connecticut College
Amy Cabaniss is the Assistant Director of the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment at Connecticut College where she manages this academic center's Certificate Program in Environmental Studies. Formerly, Amy served as the College's campus environmental coordinator for six years. Prior to this she served nine towns in Connecticut as a regional recycling coordinator for six years. Her 28-year career has been in environmental education with emphasis on solid waste management and on coastal ecology. Amy is editor of the Handbook on Household Hazardous Waste (Government Institutes Press, 2008) and President of the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA) - New England Chapter. She also served several 3-year terms on the NAHMMA Board of Directors. Amy is currently chair of the New London [County] Environmental Educators Coalition and in the past she chaired the nation's largest commission of non-formal environmental educators for three years, for the North American Association for Environmental Education.

Amy is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in environmental studies at Antioch University New England. Her research in conservation psychology has focused on behavioral theory, frameworks, and tools to affect individual behavior change for environmental benefit and in particular, participation in household hazardous waste collection programs. Amy has an MBA in Management and Organization, a professional certificate in graphic arts, and a BS in Environmental Conservation.

Josh Stoffel
Sustainability Coordinator, Connecticut College
Joshua Stoffel started his career in campus sustainability by serving as the first Sustainability Coordinator for the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During his time at UMass Amherst, Josh fostered a culture of sustainability through a variety of projects and by leading the community effort to craft the institution's Climate Action Plan. The driving force behind the culture of sustainability that he fostered was the two student engagement programs that he created to help train and empower students on campus.

Josh continued his commitment to campus sustainability by working for GreenerU after he left UMass Amherst, where he helped colleges and universities in the Northeast achieve their sustainability goals. Currently, Josh serves as Connecticut College's first Sustainability Coordinator where he will be supporting the community to generate a Sustainability Strategic Plan implementing sustainability projects across campus.

Ann-Marie Burke, Massasoit Community College; Dr. Beth Hooker, Consortium for Sustainability

Engaging faculty in sustainability initiatives or climate action planning is often challenging because of the demands of academic life. In a similar way, other stakeholders often have many competing demands on their time and are often removed from operational aspects of the campus. This clinic will provide a best practices summary of strategies for maximizing the participation of diverse stakeholders in the pursuit of sustainability.

Ann-Marie Burke
Assistant Professor at Massasoit Community College
Ann-Marie Burke is an Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Massasoit Community College. She is also a Faculty Fellow in Sustainability for the southeastern Massachusetts CONNECT consortium. CONNECT is an organization of six public colleges in southeastern Massachusetts, which works to enhance academic programs and ease transfer of students among the institutions; fosters economic development throughout the region; promotes cultural programs and projects; and shares expertise and resources. The particular focus of the Sustainability Fellowship is to advance the commitment of the six CONNECT institutions in the area of sustainability. Ann-Marie is a member of Massasoit's Sustainability Committee and also chairs the Recycling Subcommittee.

This is her fifth year as a full-time faculty member at Massasoit Community College. Prior to working at Massasoit, Ann-Marie worked in the environmental field for fourteen years. She has worked as an environmental toxicologist with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and in environmental consulting. Ann-Marie holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College and a Master of Science degree in Toxicology from Duke University.

Dr. Beth Hooker
Sustainability Programs Coordinator, Five Colleges, Incorporated
Dr. Beth Hooker has been the Sustainability Program Coordinator for the Five College consortium, comprised of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, since 2010.  In this role, she has coordinated the creation of a Five College Sustainability Studies Certificate program, contributed strongly to a European Union "Getting to know Europe" grant, convened meetings to discuss Five College collaborations around food and agricultural issues, met with energy and recycling managers to discuss campus sustainability initiatives, and discussed ways to increase collaboration with Holyoke and Greenfield Community Colleges.  She also is the Principal Investigator for a USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program grant, "Nutrient management on organic vegetable farms: A research and education program for sustainable soil fertility management in Southern New England".   Dr. Hooker has taught in the Environmental Studies program at Mount Holyoke College for the past six years.

Jennifer Andrews, Clean Air - Cool Planet

This clinic will provide a comprehensive introduction and live demonstration of the Clean Air Cool Planet's Carbon Calculator Tool. The discussion will include illustration of new web-based tools that will help new users get started and provide long-time users with information on how to access and consolidate data from multiple sources with greater flexibility.

Jennifer Andrews
Clean Air - Cool Planet
Jennifer Andrews helps coordinate integration between the different programs and projects of Clean Air Cool Planet (CA-CP), in addition to her long-standing role advising stakeholders at colleges, universities and K-12 schools across the US on how to measure and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. Jenn has been at CA-CP since early 2001. Previously, she did work in public radio, and as an historic and environmental educator for children. She holds a B.A in English and an M.A. in mental health, both from the University of New Hampshire. Jenn helped co-found a Young Professionals Association in her community. She also serves on the steering committee of her local Green Team, and in that role helped start a local Community Garden program in 2009.

Donna Barlow Casey, Vermont Technical College; Jeff Ginsberg, Jesse M. Thompson, Bunker Hill Community College

This clinic will offer strategies for creating and maintaining a dynamic institutional structure that supports climate action planning and the implementation of sustainability initiatives at colleges and   universities. The content presented will include a summary of best practices from featured panelists that will illustrate how they have formed dynamic institutional structures that support college-wide sustainability goals. Other discussion points may include strategies for overcoming challenges such as  institutional inertia and resistance to change. 

Donna Barlow Casey
Director of Sustainability, Vermont Technical College
Donna Barlow Casey is presently the Director of the Academic Center for Sustainable Practices (CSP) at Vermont Technical College - a public institution having a student population of approximately 1600 students and the State's only technical college. Donna is the first full time Director of the Center for Sustainable Practices, whose mission is to apply green technologies and sustainable practices to educational, operational, student and community-focused efforts to develop a vibrant, green economy in Vermont. Applied research opportunities in sustainability are a core component of the CSP's work. The College has installed a pellet boiler to heat a free-standing building, creating opportunities for researching the viability of mixed grass and wood pellets. Solar trackers are being installed on two of VT Tech's campuses in 2012. Capital funding to build a biodigester that will utilize source separated organics as a feedstock to provide heat and electrical energy for the Randolph campus is in the final stages of consideration. Workforce training focused on green jobs is a growing program, and the CSP provides weatherization training to all the Community Action Programs in Vermont. It will open its roster of weatherization and renewable energy training to the general public beginning in January 2012.

Prior to joining the VT Tech staff, Donna served as the Director of the Central VT Solid Waste District for 15 years where she provided 22 cities and towns with innovative environmental programming designed to reduce waste and create behavioral change in the area's population. She authored Central Vermont's Zero Waste Strategic Plan - making the region the largest group of cities and towns in the USA to commit to this cutting edge resource management philosophy. Donna is a Toxics Action Center Advisory Board member, and remains active in national zero waste circles.

Jeff Ginsberg
Director of Fiscal Affairs and Central Services,
Bunker Hill Community College
Jeff Ginsberg joined the College community in 2001 as Director of Fiscal Affairs.  In 2007, he became Director of Fiscal Affairs and Central Services.  Mr. Ginsberg is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing all budgetary activity for the College's $60 million operating and $4 million capital budget.  He helped initiate the "greening" of Bunker Hill Community College as the first Co-Chair of the President's Climate Committee at the College. Before coming to BHCC, Mr. Ginsberg was a Fiscal Policy Analyst at the Massachusetts Executive Office of Administration and Finance, a Budget Analyst at the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee, and a Legislative Specialist for InstaTrac, a comprehensive Massachusetts legislative bill tracking service in Boston, Massachusetts. He holds an M.P.A from Suffolk University and a B.A. from Colorado State University.

Jesse M. Thompson
Executive Vice President and CFO,
Bunker Hill Community College
Mr. Jesse M. Thompson is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Bunker Hill Community College. Mr. Thompson first assumed a community college leadership role in 1980, when he was appointed and subsequently elected to the Board of Trustees of Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. He served as Board Treasurer for six years. He has held executive positions at various community colleges since 1990. Mr. Thompson holds Masters Degrees from The University of Michigan and Central Michigan University in Education and Administration, respectively.

In August 1997, Mr. Thompson joined Bunker Hill Community College as Vice President of Human Resources and Facilities Management. He was promoted to Vice President of Administration in December 1998, and assumed the Chief Financial Officer responsibilities of the College. In September 2004, he was appointed to his current position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. With this appointment, he assumed the additional responsibilities of Communications and Marketing, Information Technology Services, as well as related departments. He also oversees the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

Mr. Thompson has participated on numerous NEASC accreditation teams, and has been assigned primary responsibility for the standards on planning and evaluation, physical and technological resources, and financial resources.

Prior to his employment in higher education, Mr. Thompson served as Director of Human Resources and Labor Relations in the municipal sector.

David Leavitt, Scott Benjamin, Bunker Hill Community College

Surveys are an important tool for obtaining data and information relevant to sustainability initiatives. This workshop will include a discussion of strategies for developing and delivering effective instruments with internal and external staff. It will also discuss successful examples of transportation surveys, sustainability interest surveys and curriculum needs assessments.

Scott Benjamin
Professor, Bunker Hill Community College
Scott Benjamin, lifelong academic and environmental advocate, brings a passion for conservation to a passion for teaching the next generation about the importance of social responsibility, the power of science and sustainability; he is a specialist at developing relevant academic programs in environmental and pollution prevention. Scott has developed a highly successful Study Abroad Program in Costa Rica that focuses on rainforest ecology and sustainability. He is also an expert in conducting stream chemistry research and fish identification and lamprey eel tagging.

Professor Benjamin holds an M.S. Degree in Natural Resources from the University of New Hampshire and a B.S. in Biology from the State University of New York. He is also well known for his innovative Enviromedia Project, presented to the Northeast College Honors Association that integrated environmental science, art and music and culminated in the Ecosystem Media Portrait.

David Leavitt
Director of Institutional Research, Bunker Hill Community College
David Leavitt is the Director of Institutional Research at Bunker Hill Community College. His responsibilities include conducting research and analysis to inform College decision-making, integrated planning, institutional effectiveness measures and accountability, as well as providing data and research to support the work of the College's academic and administrative divisions. He was recently appointed as a member of the Massachusetts Commissioner of Higher Education's Vision Project –Advancing a Massachusetts Culture of Assessment (AMOCA) team, whose focus is to help improve learning assessment programs on the 28 undergraduate campuses in the public system by (1) providing individualized professional consultation for campus leaders and (2) creating opportunities for more faculty engagement with assessment and for genuinely collaborative work across campuses.

Prior to joining BHCC, Mr. Leavitt was a Project Manager with Systemic Research, Inc., an education research firm overseeing evaluation projects of diverse institutions including Tribal Colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Mr. Leavitt earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Suffolk University and a Juris Doctor from Massachusetts School of Law.

Nancy Bair, Greenfield Community College; David Schmidt, Mount Wachusett Community College

This clinic will focus on challenges that are particular to the community college such as developing creative funding strategies for sustainable initiatives, accounting for scope 3 emissions, finding solutions for a lack of personnel resources and developing strategies for engaging a transient student population.

Nancy Bair
Greenfield Community College
Nancy Bair is Director of Workforce Development at Greenfield Community College and has been affiliated with community colleges in Massachusetts for over a decade. She was on the Management Team of the Sustainable Practices in Construction grant that established GCC's Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency Certificate and Degree programs in 2008. She is on the Green Campus Committee at the college along with Environmental Science Professor Brian Adams, who works with ACUPCC data at GCC.

Nancy is also an active member of the Franklin County Community Development Corporation where she helps to grow sustainable businesses and communities. Her expertise includes providing professional guidance and support to business development programs through business training & counseling, business lending, commercial properties, and the Western MA Food Processing Center.

David Schmidt
Senior Special Programs Coordinator, Mount Wachusett Community College
David Schmidt is currently a Senior Special Programs Coordinator at Mount Wachusett Community College. Previously he served as the Campus Sustainability Coordinator at Clark University from 2006 to 2010. He also led the process for creating Clark's Climate Action Plan and developed the methodology for designing a portfolio of cost-effective initiatives that best achieved the goal of carbon neutrality, targeting a 20% reduction in GHG levels by the year 2015 and net-neutral emissions in 2030. Schmidt also participated in developing the City of Worcester's first-ever Climate Action Plan and made contributions through his work with the Transportation Subcommittee.

He was appointed to the City of Worcester's second Energy Task Force in 2010, for which he is collaborating with city leadership and local utility representatives to develop the city's future Municipal Energy Policy. His professional, volunteer, and research interests center on issues of community college education, sustainability science, urban sustainability, and exploring social-technical transitions. Schmidt received a Bachelor's Degree in Geography and a Master's Degree in Community Development and Planning, both from Clark University. He is a life-long resident of Worcester, Massachusetts and is connected to various environmental and community groups in the city.

Jesse Pyles

Jesse Pyles is the Sustainability Coordinator at Unity College in Unity, Maine. He focuses his efforts on mobilizing student sustainability efforts on campus, and is coordinating the college's climate action planning process. He studied environmental studies at Pace University in New York City, and environmental education with the Audubon Expedition Institute in the Pacific Northwest, desert and canyon lands, Gulf of Maine, and North Carolina. Jesse thinks a lot about food, and is scheming ways to get back to Ogle bay Institute's Junior Nature Camp . . . as a camper.
