What We Will Do... 

  Goal One: Customer Service
  • Installed five on-line kiosks in English, Spanish and Vietnamese in Charlestown and Chelsea that provide a campus map, faculty and staff directory, and up-to-the-minute information about courses, registration and class location.
  • Opened campus sites in Chinatown and Somerville.
  • Provided customer service training workshops for more than 125 college staff.

Goal Two: Diversity
  • Established the position of Director of Diversity and Inclusion reporting to the President and a twenty-five member college-wide advisory committee to promote a climate that respects, values and includes all members of a diverse college community.
  • Held two college-wide Days of Dialogue in response to President ClintonÍs request for discussions about the nationÍs race related challenges.

Goal Three: Facilities
  • Established a full-service adjunct faculty center equipped with computers, mailboxes, individualized voice mail and student conference areas.
  • Completed phase one of the interior renovation on the Charlestown Campus resulting in forty-eight new faculty offices, refurbished library, new anti-static carpeting and flooring throughout public areas, and a lobby caf³.
  • Constructed forty-five new parking spaces, completed landscaping and irrigation, and displayed welcome banners throughout the campus grounds.
  • Commissioned a study completed by Arthur Choo and Associates that identified ADA compliance issues on the Charlestown Campus.

Goal Four: Flexibility
  • Developed an enrollment forecasting system to support planning and budgeting.
  • Increased number of web courses from ten to twenty-six, doubled the number of students in web courses, and instituted on-line advising for web courses.
  • Published the first edition of Teaching for our Times, an annual journal comprised of articles by faculty and staff for nationwide distribution.

Goal Five: Funding
  • Generated almost $100,000 to endow the Textbook Assistance Program enabling 1,100 students to borrow 1,400 books.
  • Published a comprehensive scholarship brochure; awarded twelve scholarships to high achieving Boston high school students and twenty-seven privately endowed scholarships to BHCC students.
  • Won a highly competitive Department of Education grant to develop Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies courses, incorporate study abroad into career programs and revitalize an International Studies certificate.

Goal Six: Global Learning
  • Established a college-wide International Center with orientation and support programs for international students, study abroad opportunities for students, faculty, and staff, and intercultural programming for the college community.
  • Named the Year 2000 International Intercultural Achievement Award winner by the American Council for International Intercultural Education for English as a Second Language and cultural programs.
  • Expanded the Study Abroad Scholarship program from two to ten sites with support from the Student Government Association, creating opportunities for study in Canada, Ecuador, England, Ghana, Italy, Mexico, PeopleÍs Republic of China, Portugal, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Goal Seven: Lifelong Learning
  • Partnered with UMass Boston to deliver the first upper-level course leading to a bachelorÍs degree on the BHCC campus.
  • Established the Career and Placement Center, with resume-writing, interviewing, and job placement assistance serving three-hundred students and alumni monthly.
  • Increased the number of non-credit courses from fifty-two to eighty-three in areas such as personal enrichment and professional skills development.
  • Instituted an adjunct faculty professional development program with teaching workshops, conference attendance and curriculum development projects.

Goal Eight: Partnerships
  • Established a Workforce Development and International Business Center and provided skills training to more than eight-hundred employees in Greater Boston.
  • Formed an alliance with the Edwards Middle School in Charlestown to assist a seventh grade cohort of students by providing after school programs, mentoring, and college awareness opportunities as a member of the Boston Higher Education Partnership and in cooperation with the Boston Public Schools.
  • Partnered with the Cambridge Housing Authority to provide Emergency Medical Technician training.

Goal Nine: Student Success
  • Established competencies for BHCC graduates including Personal and Professional Competence, Communication, Diversity, Technology, Critical Thinking, Scientific Method, Aesthetics, and Quantitative Reasoning.
  • Expanded the collegeÍs Service Learning Program involving sixteen faculty and twenty-three courses to provide community volunteer opportunities for students.
  • Initiated twenty-two academic department orientations to ease studentsÍ adjustment to college life.

Goal Ten: Technology
  • Installed a state-of-the-art student information system to enhance all record-keeping efforts college-wide.
  • Added interactive state-of-the-art technology to create four more smart classrooms.
  • Offered Criminal Justice degree and certificate programs on-line.
  • Established a virtual library in Chelsea for student access to books, periodicals and reference materials through the web.
